The aim of the present study was to compare microbial community during spoilage processes in beef meat and plant-based burger by monitoring the total bacterial count over several days at three different storage temperatures. All key microorganisms isolated during spoilage were identified by MALDI-TOF MS. After six days of storage at 25°C, the bacterial counts for the plant-based and meat burgers were increased from basic 4.6 to 8.9 log10 CFU/g and from 4.9 to 9.0 log10 CFU/g, respectively. On the tenth day of storage at 12°C, the bacterial counts were enumerated as 7.9 log10 CFU/g for the vegetable burger and 9.0 log10 CFU/g for the meat burger. At the lowest temperature of 6°C on the 10-th day, the total count of microorganisms reached 9.9 log10 CFU/g for vegetable burger and 9.8 log10 CFU/g for meat burger. The identification of 304 isolates showed that the plant-based burger was dominated by lactic acid bacteria of the genera Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, and Lactobacillus, while the beef meat burger contained most often bacteria belonging to Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Carnobacterium, and Lactococcus.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the pathology which can be observed in four cases of stranded cetaceans in the costal area of the Black Sea, in order to highlight the main causes of mortality and the associated lesions patterns. Those cases included severe respiratory diseases (parasitism, bacterial pneumonia), endocrine disorders associated with chronic stress (adrenal hyperplasia), acute head trauma and, also, specimens in an advanced state of decomposition. The necropsy examination was completed with histopathological and microbiological investigations and the results obtained was providing a perspective on the interactions of biological, anthropogenic and environmental factors that are involved in cetaceans’ mortality. The study points out the necessity for multidisciplinary monitoring and early intervention in the conservation of marine mammals.

This study aims to describe the anatomical features of the thoracic and pelvic limbs in Mandrillus sphinx. Detailed analysis has highlighted the distinctive morphological features of this species. The scapula has an accessory scapular spine that divides the infraspinous fossa into two unequal portions and a prominent acromion flanked by a small para-acromion. The lateral and superior margins are strongly developed, continuing with sharp bony prominences curved towards the neck of the scapula. The humerus has a large prominent tubercle and a small tubercle of reduced size. The deltoid surface is markedly expanded and the deltoid tuberosity is very well developed. The supinator crest, clearly evident, extends proximally from the lateral epicondyle. The radius has a prominent radial crest and the ulna has a medially oriented trochlear notch and a tuberous olecranon. The coxal bone is notable for a well-developed dorso-caudal ischium, thus forming the ischial tuberosities. The femur does not have a third trochanter, which is replaced by the gluteal tuberosity. The tibia has a prominent tibial crest, slightly bent laterally, medially to it, with an extended distal tuberosity. On the medial side of the fibula, there is a prominent crest representing the surface for the insertion of the interosseous membrane. Following the detailed description of the bone structures that make up the pelvic limb, we can classify this species as intermediate between higher and lower primates, being adapted to a mixed arboreal-terrestrial environment.

Dental conditions such as tooth crown fracture, periodontitis or apical tooth root abscess in dogs can cause eye damage. Ophthalmological examination of patients from small dog breeds (Bichon, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian) or brachycephalic dogs (Pug, Shih-tzu, Peckinez, French Bulldog) diagnosed with conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcer or uveitis must be completed with a dental examination. The information obtained through imaging (x-ray or CT) shows the degree of dental damage that can be one of the causes of the eye disease. The position of the roots of the 4th premolar in the dog and the maxillary molars near the incomplete orbit allows periodontal disease to develop orbital (retrobulbar) cellulitis. The therapy should primarily include treating the primary dental condition as quickly as possible to prevent secondary ocular complications (panophthalmia) that can lead to enucleation.

Advanced imaging and 3D reconstruction technologies are transforming veterinary surgical planning by enabling precise and customized interventions. This case report describes a 14-year-old cat with a facial mass, where CT imaging revealed extensive bone lysis affecting the orbit and adjacent facial bones. Volumetric CT data were used to create a 3D model of the skull, which served as the basis for designing a custom titanium implant via CAD and 3D printing. While these implants provided a potential solution for restoring anatomical integrity, the owner ultimately declined surgery due to financial constraints. This report highlights the potential of integrating CT imaging, 3D reconstructions, and CAD technologies in veterinary implantology, while emphasizing the financial and logistical challenges that limit the accessibility of these advanced solutions.

Veterinary incubators play a critical role in modern veterinary medicine; however, they can also serve as reservoirs for microbial contamination. The present study aims to assess the presence and the diversity of microorganisms in veterinary incubators used in different veterinary clinics. Swab samples were collected from various inner surfaces across multiple incubators; the Koch method was applied for airborne infections control as well as liquid samples obtained from the air filtration components. The resulting CFU was compared to the references provided by the Romanian Health Ministry Order 961/2016. Microbial identification was performed by inoculating selective growth media, biochemical techniques, and identification of characteristics of microorganisms macroscopically and microscopically. A questionnaire was provided to the employes to assess their knowledge on incubator hygiene. The qualitative methods of examination revealed a diverse range of bacterial and fungal species. Obvious differences in microbial load were observed for both airborne and surface microflora based on incubator usage and sanitation frequency. These findings highlight the importance of updating cleaning and disinfection protocols and implementing routine microbiological monitoring to ensure the safety of veterinary patients.

Several essential and toxic elements were determined from cow milk and hair samples. The studied individuals (n = 10) were all females from the Romanian Spotted breed, raised through extensive farming, exclusively involving animals from local households. ICP-MS was used to determine the concentrations of Pb, Cd, Ni, Hg, Al, Zn, Cu, and Ca. Statistical analysis showed that Pb, Ni, Al, Zn, and Cu concentrations in milk and hair samples differ significantly (p < 0.05), all being higher in hair samples. Several strong significant correlations were observed between the analysed elements, such as the negative correlation between Ca levels in hair and Cd levels in milk (ρ = –0.875, p = 0.001) and the positive correlation between Ca and Ni concentrations in milk (ρ = 0.855, p = 0.002). The findings of this research mainly support existing knowledge regarding toxic and essential element interactions, while highlighting the importance of minimizing environmental pollution, as elements from the environment can bioaccumulate in the animals’ organism and transfer through milk, and other animal-based products, to consumers.

Wild birds of prey found in Romania play a key role in maintaining biodiversity due to their position at the top of the food pyramid (Baltag, 2010). Birds are distinguished from other animals by the presence of a pneumatic skeleton with a thinner cortex, which makes them more sensitive to the dangers of the modern era (Ahmed et al., 2019; Novitskaya et al., 2017). 98 cases were documented from the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of the "Visul Luanei" Foundation during 2024, of which the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) (33.67%), and owls (order Strigiformes) (43%) were the most encountered species. The birds underwent clinical examination, 30 were suitable for intervention with various coaptation techniques. 168 injuries were recorded, humerus (29/168) being the most affected, and the coraco-scapular humeral joint had the highest ratio of healed trauma 5/15. The study aimed to identify post-traumatic lesions of the appendicular skeleton, their presentation, the time elapsed since their occurrence, the physical condition, and the methods of treatment, providing a clear perspective on the difficulties in the rehabilitation of wild birds of prey.

Research on the pineal gland in pigs has gained significant interest due to the physiological similarities between pigs and humans, making pigs a relevant animal model for studying pineal function and its potential applications in medicine. All though recent studies have focused on the pineal gland (mostly regarding structure and innervation of the gland), our own research highlighted in the present paper, as a result of optical and electronic microscopy (TEM and SEM), details of histological and ultramicroscopic organization of the constituent cell types of the pineal gland in pigs. We focused on demonstrating the possible physiological mechanisms of secretion, as well as the elimination pathways of the active endocrine biological products (indole and peptide hormones) of the component cells of the pineal gland. Our research significantly contributes with important information about the function and the internal cell mechanisms of this important endocrine gland and provides valuable insights for biomedical applications that can translate in human medicine.
